Legends of The Sea: Unleash The Kraken!!

The scary part is..it just might be real.

Ok, I don’t know about you but have you found yourself diving into the sinister sea shanty laden depth of North Sea TikTok?! Every time I hear the deep “Yo Ho '' and see the bow of a giant cargo ship, my blood runs cold!

Fun fact about me..I have a deep (no pun intended) fear of the open water. Only 20% of the world's oceans have been explored and yet they take up like 70% of the earth's surface!!

Well, this got my mind sailing (pun intended) Just what is lurking in the depths of the sea..and I could think of no better place to turn than Maritime Folklore!

You got it..we are talking about the Kraken!

The Kraken is a legendary sea monster originating from Scandinavian folklore.

It is said to be a gigantic sea monster that resembles a squid or an octopus, but with a body as large as an island and tentacles that can wrap around an entire ship dragging her and her sailors to their doom.

Legends say that The Kraken dwells in the deepest parts of the North Sea, where it waits for unsuspecting ships to cross its path.

There are stories from mariners reporting encounters with the beast all the way back to the 13th century. They describe these grotesque tentacles rising up out of the water and attempting to grab hold of the ship and drag it down into the depths below.

In the early 1920s pieces of two massive tentacles were found in the stomach of a sperm whale…those massive bits of tentacles belonged to what we now know to be a colossal squid.

The largest known colossal squid to date was caught in 2007 off the coast of antarctica. It measured around 10 meters long or around 33 feet and weighed in at a whopping 450kg just shy of 1000lbs!

Somehow my thalassophobia feels justified now!

What do you think? Is the Kraken merely a legend or are there real monsters lurking in the icy depths of the seas… Head on over to The Haunted Grove Podcast Facebook and Instagram page and let us know what you think!

For me..I think I will stay in the shallows thank you very much.
